Temari (手まり) were originally introduced in Japan in the 7th century. The balls are meticulously handmade with tightly wrapped fabric and thread, displaying brilliant colors and patterns. Some are wrapped so tightly that they are able to bounce. They were traditionally given to children by their mothers as a New Years' gift, and represent deep love, friendship, and loyalty.
